Reactive Dog Groups
Achievement not Anxiety

We work with many dogs on a range of issues to help improve their behaviour.  A lot of  this work is done on a 1-1 basis.  Please go to behaviour improvement for further details.  Alternatively, you and your dog can join one of our behaviour improvement groups - which we call Reactive Dog Groups.

These small group classes are suitable for dogs that are:-
  • Reactive on the lead to other dogs/other stimuli
  • Unable to listen or focus due to anxiety or fear
  • Hyper-vigilant when out on walks - always on the 'alert'
  • Hyperactive or boisterous - unable to walk on a loose lead.

Please note: These groups are not suitable for dogs with people reactivity.  If your dog has issues in this area please go to People Reactive Dogs for other ways we can help.

The Reactive Dog Groups have been developed in response to the needs of our 'canine clients' for whom the environment of a traditionally structured dog training class is inappropriate at the moment.

There are very few training centres in the country offering dog owners help and support through this type of small group behavioural work.  Our groups are based on a model pioneered in the U.S.

The aim of the groups is primarily to promote the ability to listen; this is the foundation of good communication and subsequent understanding between you and your dog.  As a team you learn how to relax and focus, allowing stress levels to reduce and learning to take place.  We use a combination of behaviour modification and Tellington Touch techniques.  Training methods are based around positive reinforcement and incorporate clickers and the use of variable value rewards.

Working in a small group environment can have many positive consequences for both you and your dog.  Of particular benefit may be that you realise you are not alone in your experiences of behavioural or social problems.  We aim to provide tools to allow you to manage stress and anxiety in any given situation and to allow your dog to be 'the best it can be'.

The groups are very carefully controlled and managed.  They are made up of four two hour sessions.   There are only between 4-6 dogs in each group.  The groups are run by our certified Tellington Touch practitioner, Linda Cooper, and our qualified behaviourist Kirsten Cutler.  For more information about Linda and Kirsten please go to Meet the Team.

If you are interested in finding out more about our groups, or would like an informal chat to see if the groups may be suitable for you please contact us.

Feedback from two of  our Reactive Dog Group clients (the first is a vet who brought her own dog along):

"I think the course definitely helped me to achieve what I wanted which was to understand Tattie better and know what to do in certain situations.  I feel much closer to her now which is lovely.  The nurses are quite interested and certainly some of them will try some TTouch on the patients - ear pulls mostly in situations such as taking blood.  And the course certainly opened my eyes to more ideas and methods so was inspirational.  And you and Kirsten have both been so kind and interested and patient.  Almost my favourite bit was the tea break or the bit before we started when we were all talking about our dogs to like- minded people. That was lovely and reassuring.  I guess the people who come are of a certain mind set and want to try the best for their dogs.  Thanks once again - now I have to continue the good work!"

"Just had to email you.  When we got home Maddie was absolutely zonked which was great.  A  tired, relaxed dog from just being calm - I can't believe it!  Then on top of that a wonderful walk this morning - no pulling, no nothing and again another relaxed dog and owner.  We did play toy on the field which obviously sent her on a higher level but after five minutes the toy went away, we sat and chilled and then plodded home.  Thank you, thank you, thank you."
